There is something humbling about the information that the world’s largest single organism is a fungus. Located in the Blue Mountains of Oregon the
Armillaria ostoyae is a blob infiltrating 2,384 acres of soil (10 square kilometers). It is estimated to be 2400 years old, a number derived from its growth rate, but it could be much older if it had periods of stalled growth or die-back.
