Acceptance of that makes a dangerous task easier -- and maybe even less dangerous since we aren't nervously fumbling.Richard Bellushhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10108081864942272619noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1656921634940224775.post-49903575519978659482014-10-19T12:23:29.901-04:002014-10-19T12:23:29.901-04:00This week I listened to an interview with astronau...This week I listened to an interview with astronaut Chris Hadfield who talked about his time aboard the ISS, and other such space topics. He said when he was in training he learned how to channel his fear, which I thought would be a useful concept to us all. My hesitation about accepting Becker’s thesis wholeheartedly, though, comes partly from the ease with which I can conjure up possible scenarios that are worse than death – to my mind, at least, and to many other folks too. Also, I think we not just repress thoughts of death but truly forget them sometimes when distracted by the temptations of life – Freud was not all hogwash when positing Eros as a motivator. Nonetheless, I do buy that our mortality looms large in our minds and civilization. On the scales of Thanatos and Eros, the former may be heavier than Sig allowed.Richard Bellushhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10108081864942272619noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1656921634940224775.post-62107989422109500262014-10-14T21:11:10.378-04:002014-10-14T21:11:10.378-04:00I remember getting into a discussion about fear an...I remember getting into a discussion about fear and how all fear is based on death. Even stupid things, like fear of speaking in public, eventually boil down to this. It was an interesting theory. The fear of public speaking was a funny example. Mostly because my friend felt that deep down we are afraid the audience will turn against the speaker and then swarm like a mob and rip the speaker apart. Sounded more like a zombie attack, but I knew where he was coming from.Roman J. Martelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09545497713474664555noreply@blogger.com
